CHAPTER SIX
âWe missed our chance to look for the horse,â Sarah said as Jacob walked into the house. âWe'll have to go tomorrow after school.â
âFine,â Jacob said as he walked up the stairs, straight past her. He'd been hoping to avoid her. If anything she'd become the annoying little sister that no one ever wanted to have.
She followed him up the stairs anyway.
âJacob, were you hanging out with Deborah again?â
Jacob stopped dead at the top of the stairs and turned around. Sarah was staring at him with her inquisitive blue eyes, her hair in complete disarray from completing her afternoon chores. Jacob turned and walked toward his room, and as expected, she followed him. When they were both inside, he shut the door and faced her.
âWhat do you know?â he demanded.
âEverything,â she shrugged. âThat's what happens when you're little. Everyone ignores you, and they think you ignore them.â
âListen,â Jacob said, âyou can't tell anyone, ever. You don't know what kind of trouble she could get into.â
âShe?â
âHer father would go ballistic!â
âSo, you're more worried about her, than yourself?â âWhat?â
âDad told me that you would go to jail if you left here. Aren't you worried about being sent back?â
It was an odd but relevant question. When he came here he had cared more for himself than anyone else, but in this case...something had changed. Something had changed significantly. Why was he having trouble caring for himself in this case? For some reason he couldn't stand the thought of seeing Deborah in trouble, especially by the father he viewed as a monster. He was genuinely concerned for her safety, yet he had never actually realized it before now. What was happening to him?
âYou see what God does for us?â Sarah said, a slight grin on her face. âHe takes away the selfishness and helps us to become better. You're becoming better just by being here.â
âI don't think God had anything to do with it,â Jacob said. âI can't even understand half the sermon on Sunday.â
âBut God is God!â Sarah insisted. âHe doesn't care about language or where you came from, he cares about you! He believes in you!â
âI'm not so sure about that,â Jacob said. Why was he arguing with her. She was telling him that he was a better person; he was equally trying to stamp out that fact. Maybe, he was crazy.
âThat's okay,â Sarah said, turning toward the door ignoring his retort. âHe is.â
They didn't speak for the rest of the evening, at least not like that. She left Jacob to be alone with his thoughts, and he wondered if he was really, truly changing, and if that was even possible. He was still young, but he had been operating under the assumption that people never change. Not his friends, not the other children in the shelter, not the police, or the social workers.
Everyone had been born with their own agenda, and they worked to fulfill it. He had never held this fact against any of them. But, what if it
